Maura Kluthe graduated from Gillespie High School in 2011, earning a $500 Henry Marcacci Memorial Scholarship from The Partnership for Educational Excellence.

Maura graduated from Gillespie High School (GHS) in 2011. She then attended Blackburn College in Carlinville where she majored in biology and minored in environmental science. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in 2015.

“Blackburn College fit me well. It’s a smaller college, and everybody knew one another and helped each other,” she recalls. “You had a close relationship working with your professors. They helped us decide on post-college options and prepared us for those choices.”

She says she plans to continue her education with graduate school, but has no immediate plans.

After Blackburn, Maura took a job at Washington University in St. Louis where she works in the fields of neurology and immunology/pathology as they relate to Alzheimer’s Disease. She is dedicated to helping find and support cures for diseases.

In her leisure time Maura enjoys cooking, reading, bicycling, camping, hiking – “anything outdoors” that relates to nature, the environment, and animals.

Regarding her scholarship, Maura says, “I worked in the ‘Work Program’ at Blackburn, which taught me the responsibilities of holding a job. I learned many different jobs, and earned part of my tuition. That made me feel like I participated in paying for college.” But The Partnership scholarship was “very generous,” she says. “It helped me obtain my degree. I am so thankful for it.”

Maura is the daughter of Steve and Judy Kluthe of Gillespie.

Heath Wayman graduated from Gillespie High School in 2008, earning a $500 Tebbe Family Foundation Scholarship from The Partnership for Educational Excellence.

Heath attended Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois, majoring in physics and minoring in mathematics. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in December 2011.

He spent his first six post-college years working at Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, Illinois. Heath worked on "anything you could find inside the cab of a caterpillar machine or electronic products. I worked as a draftsman, mechanical designer, and eventually became a team lead for all draftsmen working on cabs." In January 2016, Caterpillar cut a few thousand jobs, "and mine was one of them," he says.

It took a year of searching before he found his next good opportunity. "In late 2017 I found a good fit near Naperville, Illinois at Argonne National Laboratory," he says. "I am currently doing mechanical design work for magnets for the advanced photo source (APS) upgrade project." The APS is a photon accelerator that creates extremely bright X-rays used to study material science, biology, chemistry, geology, and physics.

"Multiple Nobel prizes have been awarded to people whose research was involved with the current APS. This multi-year project will produce a new version that will once again be world-leading for capability and brightness," he says.

Heath and his wife Ashely enjoy golfing and hiking.

As to the importance of his post-secondary education, he says: "My college experience has really shaped my entire life. I met my wife there. All my career opportunities exist because of my education. It was also the first time I was really challenged in life. It was a great place to learn life lessons while still having plenty of security and support."

Heath concludes, "Thank you to The Partnership for the work being done to provide financial support to education. Every little bit helps to ease the burden on families," he says. "it's pretty amazing how quickly the next semester hits and how quickly the next payment is due."

Heath is the son of Charlie and Margaret Wayman of Gillespie.

29 Percent of GHS Grads Receive Partnership For Educational Excellence Scholarships at Culmination of its 25th Anniversary Year

A full 29 percent of Gillespie High School (GHS) graduating seniors were awarded $1,000 tuition scholarships by The Partnership for Educational Excellence at the culmination of its 25th anniversary celebration. Every dollar of these awards came from local individuals, businesses, alums, and foundations.

Thanks to a generous response to The Partnership’s 25th anniversary fund drive, $25,000 was raised to support the increase of its scholarships from $500 to $1,000 for each awardee. In addition, the 25th anniversary occasioned the establishment of a remarkable eight new scholarships: Bloome, Cordes, Dewitt, Hebenstreit, H.E.I.D.I., Tallman, VFW 4547 (two were awarded), and Zirkelbach.

MARY FRANCES (MISSY) BLOOME MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Mary Frances (Missy) Bloome attended the 30th reunion of the GHS Class of 1987 in the fall of 2017, shortly before her untimely death. As a memorial to Missy and as a gift to The Partnership, the Class of 1987 honors Missy, the first of their peers to pass away, with a one-time scholarship.

Olivia VanDoren, daughter of John and Jackie VanDoren of Gillespie, will study cosmetology at the University of Spa and Cosmetology Arts in Springfield, Illinois.

EMIL BORGINI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Emil Borgini’s career as an educator included time as a teacher of English, history and French in Benld and in Gillespie. He also served as principal of GHS for 20 years and concluded his career as district superintendent. For many years an anonymous donor has made this award possible.

Jaiden Braundmeier, daughter of Zach and Amber Braudmeier of Benld, will study elementary education at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

CORDES FAMILY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Established in 2018 by Pete and Sally Prevedell Seraphin with funds won during The Partnership’s third Grand Raffle, it honors Sally’s maternal ancestors. Fred and Amelia Cordes were known for their enterprise, gardens, and hospitality at their small farm in the Hudson River Valley. Their only son Fred shared these qualities with his wife Ann and daughter Donna after settling in Chicago.

Maya Marcacci, daughter of Mike and Susan Marcacci of Benld, will study pre- medicine at Lewis and Clark Community College.

ELINOR DAVIES NURSING SCHOLARSHIP Established by friends and family – husband Larry and sons Mike and Tim and their families – in honor of Elinor who served many decades as school nurse in CUSD7. She was also an active member of the Gillespie First United Methodist Church.

Haileigh Rife, daughter of William and Deanna Rife of Gillespie, will study nursing at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.

CAROL ENRICO DE LUCCA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR A TOP GIRL GRADUATE Family and friends endowed the award in memory of this Benld native who was a respected educator and counselor. The daughter of Rose Enrico, Carol established a consulting business to help students pursue their goals through higher education. Her daughters Allison and Ashley live in California.

Hannah Labby, daughter of Robert and Carol Labby of Eagarville, will study occupational therapy at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville.

ROGER DEWITT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP An outpouring of memorials for this popular and talented farmer, painter, horse breeder, horticulturist, and musician led his wife Vicki to establish this award. Music - song writing and performing with his band Southern Blend - was the backdrop of his career as a farmer, breeder of American Paint horses, and second career as an artist. Self-taught, he came to art in mid life and developed a passion for depicting the disappearing culture of the rural Midwest and small family farm life.

William Bertetto, III, son of William and Michelle Bertetto of Benld, will study pre- medicine at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

ANDREW EASTON, SR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Friends and a family filled with teachers set up this award to honor a life-long educator and football coach. He was a devoted mentor to scores of youngsters. "He’d have loved helping the young get their educations," say wife Florence and children.

Mackenzie Kasarda, daughter of George and Amy Kasarda of rural Shipman, will study physical therapy at Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri.

DANNY GRIFFEL MEMORIAL AGRICULTURE SCHOLARSHIP Danny, a veteran who served in the Army in Korea, was a local farmer. A graduate of GHS, he was a member of many social and civic local organizations. Honored in 2009 for continuous ownership and operation of the family farm since 1856, he began farming with horses. He enjoyed his Mustangs, boating and motorcycles. His son Dave farms and served on the CUSD7 school board. His daughter Donna Easton is school nurse at B-GES. Four of his grandchildren are Partnership scholars.

Nick Spencer, son of Rick and Julie Spencer of Gillespie, will study at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, Illinois. His major is undecided.

GIL AND MARY JEAN HEBENSTREIT SCHOLARSHIP “We want to encourage young people to pursue their goals through education,” say the Hebenstreits in establishing this annual scholarship in 2018. In 1961 they moved to the area and purchased a funeral home in Gillespie. Subsequently they operated furniture stores in Gillespie, Benld, Auburn, and Edwardsville. Next they ran an Anheuser Busch beer distributorship out of Benld while also buying and renting apartments. Their apartment business still thrives. They are the parents of Mary Louise, Gene, and Margie Brill.

Kayla Spencer, daughter of Greg and Trish Spencer of Gillespie, will study accounting at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.

H.E.I.D.I. FOUNDATION MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Founded in 2011 by Gerald and Sandi Brand in memory of their daughter Heidi, the foundation’s name stands for Helping Every Individual Develop Independence. “Heidi was a very special girl with special needs, but she never let any physical shortcomings limit her big heart or her determination for independence,” say the Brands. “We are pleased and excited in 2018 for the first time ever, to endow a scholarship with the help of The Partnership, to assist either students with special needs to continue their educations or students pursuing a career that helps those with special needs. One of the trademark symbols of the H.E.I.D.I. Foundation is the butterfly; we hope this scholarship will help a student spread his or her wings and do great things.”

Karli Carr, daughter of Dana Skinner and Robert Carr, will study physical therapy at Illinois State University in Normal.

JOHN AND MARY HICKS SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE TRADES John, mayor of Gillespie and a local businessman, and Mary, an active civic volunteer, offer this award in memory of his parents, Lloyd and Betty Hicks. “My dad saw the honor of working with your own two hands,” says John.

Blaine Fritz, son of David Fritz and Laurie Piechur, will pursue an electrical/business career at Ranken Technical College.

JOSEPH and EILEEN LIBBRA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Married for 48 years, they were hard working grain and livestock farmers and dedicated to their four children, Mary Sievers, Joe, Trish Elking, and Carol Kramer, and their ten grandchildren.

Ben Polo, son of Kevin and Therese Polo of rural Carlinville, will study veterinary medicine at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

DENIS McGRADY SR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Denis graduated from the University of Illinois Commerce and Law program, returned to Gillespie to raise nine children, and to practice law for almost 50 years. In addition to valuing education, Denis loved roses and trees, his garden becoming a destination for many GHS botany field trips. His children are Denis, Jr.; Connie Page; Mikey McPheters; Doug; Charlie; Barb Mathenia; Margaret Enlow; Murray; and Brian.

Ally Clay, daughter of David and Chris Clay of Gillespie, will study pre-law at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, Illinois.

ROBERT M. PREVEDELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Robert lived 94 years as a farmer near Eagarville. Beloved by all for his dignity, good nature, integrity, and generosity, he was a prolific woodworker; veteran house mover; self-taught musician; talented gardener. He was proud of and devoted to his late wife Catherine, his four children (Bob, Toni Bartell, Pat Rath, and Pam Pitton), seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Sydney Henrichs, daughter of Eric and Gina Henrichs of Dorchester, will study occupational therapy at Lewis and Clark Community College.

SAM STEWART MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Sam was a talented athlete and teacher whose lifelong dedication to sports and education shaped his career. He was a CUSD7 baseball coach for 30 years, and he coached basketball and football as well. “Sam would be pleased. This scholarship is a way of ‘paying it forward,’ in his memory,” says his wife, Suzanne.

Gavin Brown, son of Ryan and Jamie Brown of Gillespie, will study to become an electric distribution lineman at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois.

ADAM M. TALLMAN AGENCY, FARMERS INSURANCE BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP

Established by local businessman, Adam and his wife Trista, both past Partnership scholars and both holders of business degrees, returned to CUSD7 to raise their children Addison and Jaxon. This scholarship will assist a student pursuing a career in business. “We thought it only fitting to pay it forward to a student who can benefit from it like we did,” says Adam.

Rylee Sarti, daughter of Jeremy and Shannon Sarti of Gillespie, will study accounting at Lewis and Clark Community College.

MARJORIE & MATT TURCOL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP by family and friends. Matt and Marge’s great joy was their family. Marge is remembered by all for her generous and caring ways. Matt was mayor of Benld and president of the CUSD7 school board. Their daughter Susan is a frequent mini-grant recipient and their three grandsons, Dyllan, Derrek, and Dennis, are Partnership scholars.

Marshall Hatlee, son of Kelley and Becky Hatlee of Gillespie, will study mass communications at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

UMWA Local 1613 SCHOLARSHIP The union represents coal miners, health care workers, truck drivers, manufacturing employees and public employees in our communities. UMWA 1613 fights for safe workplaces, good wages and benefits, and fair representation in workplaces.

Adam Reed, son of Brandi and David Reed of Gillespie, will study pre-pharmacy at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois.

VFW POST 4547 SCHOLARSHIPS In 2018 The Partnership for Educational Excellence is pleased to offer two new scholarships for the children or grandchildren of U.S. military veterans and/or students who have committed to ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) in college. These scholarships are the gift of the now disbanded Gillespie VFW Post 4547.

Paige Niemeyer, daughter of Matt and Robin Niemeyer of Gillespie, will study business at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Paige’s maternal grandfather William Campbell, was a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran of the Vietnam war.
Nate Reiniesch, son of Mike and Amy Reiniesch of Benld, will study to become an electric distribution lineman at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois. His father is a Marine Corps veteran deployed to the Middle East in the 1990s

JAMES “ZIRK” ZIRKELBACH SCHOLARSHIP Zirk’s nine children set up this award in 2018 to honor his accomplishments in law enforcement in Macoupin County. “We want him to enjoy seeing the young people who carry forward his commitment to law enforcement,” says the family. He was Macoupin County sheriff from 1990-1998; Chief Investigator for Macoupin County; a member of the Macoupin County Board for many years; a founder of Macoupin and Montgomery County Crime Stoppers; and active in the statewide Sheriff’s Association. His children include married daughters Tracy Werner, Joan Cain, and Kimberly Burns. His sons are Robert, Dennis, James, Mark, Brian, and Bradley.

Macie Halpin, daughter of William and Tammy Halpin of Gillespie, will study forensic science at Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri.

EVALINE BOEHMKE MUSICIANSHIP AWARDS: Evaline (Mrs. Robert) Boehmke, was an ardent supporter of music in CUSD7. She left a bequest for $100 cash awards for students to be selected by the music faculty of GHS for outstanding musicianship in band and chorus. This year the Band winner is Adam Reed, and the Chorus winner is Tara Fullington.

Katie Herkert Ronald graduated from Gillespie High School in 2000, earning a $500 W.E. Schmidt Family Foundation Scholarship from The Partnership for Educational Excellence.

Katie says she entered the six year, degree specific program at St. Louis College of Pharmacy because of her love for science and math in high school, but with very little research or experience in potential careers. “I would not necessarily recommend my approach to career planning, but I am more than delighted with where my journey has led,” she says.

With her doctorate of pharmacy (ParmD) in hand in 2006, Katie headed off to Marshfield, Wisconsin, to complete a postgraduate residency program. She returned to a position at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) where she is now a Clinical Associate Professor as well as a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.

“I wear three different hats at SIUE,” she says. “I work as a pharmacist at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield where I work with the SIU School of Medicine Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care to provide clinical pharmacy services to the medical intensive care unit. I help choose, monitor and change medications and doses for patients’ best possible outcomes.” This involves daily bedside ICU rounds with a team of physicians, residents and medical students, and nurse practitioners. I work as well with social workers, physical therapists, and speech therapists.”

Katie also teaches fourth year pharmacy students who come to Memorial for hands-on training. In addition, she does classroom teaching at the pharmacy school at SIUE.

“My newest responsibility is serving as Assessment Coordinator for the School of Pharmacy,” she says. This involves creating assessment tools and strategies to meet accreditation standards as well as helping to collect and organize data needed for accreditation.

Katie is married to John Ronald. They have two sons, Ian 7 and Jase 5. “We love to travel and go camping as a family; in general we love to be outdoors,” she says. As the boys become more involved in sports, so do Katie and John. She is a director of The Partnership and an active participant in their family-owned store, Hicks Maytag in Gillespie.

As to the importance of post-secondary education, Katie says: “I would not have the fulfilling career” without it. “I was truly blessed to have the emotional support of family and friends as well as the financial support of scholarships from organizations such as The Partnership. Every additional dollar helps lighten the financial burden and stress... Working in higher education I see the stress students face every day due to financial burdens, especially as college gets more expensive as each year passes.

“No student should avoid a dream career path due to financial restraint,” she says. “I am thankful for the scholarship I received from The Partnership as it helped lighten my financial burden as well as provide me with a sense of community support. ‘It takes a village to raise a child’,” Katie quotes, “and The Partnership was part of my village.”

In that spirit, Katie has donated $500 to The Partnership’s drive to raise $25,000 to permanently expand scholarships to $1,000. The funds will be used to match dollar-for-dollar established memorial scholarships.

Katie is the daughter of Jospeh Herkert of Gillespie and Donna Ottersburg of Gillespie.

Jacob Fredericks graduated from Gillespie High School in 2014, earning a $500 Carroll-Keupper Family Scholarship from The Partnership for Educational Excellence.

Jacob attends the St. Louis College of Pharmacy where he is a first year professional student. “I will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in May of 2018,” he says, “and then proceed into the Doctorate of Pharmacy program at St. Louis College of Pharmacy.”

In addition to his classroom studies, Jacob has worked at a CVS pharmacy for the past two and a half years. “I’ve recently entered their intern program after getting my white coat in August of 2017,” he says.

As to long-term goals, he is holding all his options open. “Pharmacy school leads to a broad profession,” he says. “I will have to weigh my options as they come.” He’s confident that those options will include many desirable paths: “My experience at St. Louis College of Pharmacy will set me up for success in the pharmacy profession, no matter which path I choose.”

When he’s not working or studying, Jacob enjoys fishing, golfing, and “anything else outdoors.”

Regarding the role his Partnership scholarship played, he reflects: “The Partnership scholarship is the epitome of what our small town is all about,” says Jacob. “The gracious donors did what I strive to accomplish one day. That is to give back to the community that I grew up in. With the price of college tuition, any amount helps.”

Jacob is the son of Rusty and Gina Fredericks of Gillespie.

Jennifer Chronister graduated from Gillespie High School in 2008, earning a $500 W.E. Schmidt Family Foundation Scholarship from The Partnership for Educational Excellence.

Jennifer attended Blackburn College in Carlinville from 2008 through 2012, attaining a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry. She then attended Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis where she earned a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2015.

She keeps her skills honed with continuing education courses, recently completing courses focused on treating people with lymphedema.

Jennifer currently works as a physical therapist at SSM Health and Physical Therapy in Edwardsville, Illinois. There she “performs evaluation and treatment of patients of all ages in an outpatient orthopedic setting,” she says. “I also specialize in the treatment of lymphedema and vestibular conditions.” Her work involves maintaining working and professional relationships with referring physicians.

In her free time, Jennifer enjoys watching movies and “cuddling with my puppy. We also enjoy spending time with family and friends whenever we can,” she says. She also completed her first half marathon in February. And she is engaged to be married in September 2018.

Reflecting on the importance of her post-secondary education, Jennifer says: “I would not have the opportunities presented to me today without higher education: not only in academics, but in exposure to diversity. Growing up in a small town was a great experience, but it was not until college that I was truly exposed to people of different backgrounds. Because of my experiences, I now have friends throughout the U.S.”

As to the role which her Partnership scholarship played, she says that it “relieved me of some of the cost of attending college. Any bit of assistance can go a long way in helping someone achieve educational goals. I am so glad to see how The Partnership is able to continue assisting young adults attain higher education.”

United Community Bank in Gillespie Makes Important Contribution to The Partnership's 25th Anniversary Fund

United Community Bank’s (UCB) Gillespie branch has made a $2,000 gift to The Partnership for Educational Excellence. The money is in response to the education foundation’s 25th anniversary drive to raise at least $25,000 to increase its academic tuition scholarships to $1,000 each.

“The bank is very excited to make this gift,” says Jenni Alepra , Senior Vice President - Retail, Regional Manager. “I went to our president, Todd Wise, and showed him what remarkable contributions The Partnership has made in the past quarter century. I said I’d like the bank to be a part of this 25th anniversary fund drive. His response was enthusiastic and generous. We’re proud to make this contribution to the future of our children and our community.”

Alepra notes that UCB’s Student of the Month program, which culminates in an annual scholarship, reflects the bank’s hometown community banking philosophy that has been in place since 1973. In addition, Alepra herself has been an active and committed member of the CUSD7 school board for 16 years.

“We are grateful for the support which Jenni Alepra and UCB have always shown The Partnership,” says John Fassero, Jr., president and a founding member. “UCB has supported every one of our fund raisers. Now this gift is a thrilling new chapter in their generosity. Every penny will be used to match existing memorial scholarships dollar-for-dollar.”

Headquartered in Chatham, Illinois, UCB is locally owned and managed. The company empowers branch managers to make local decisions that best support the communities where they work and live.

Hebenstreits Establish Scholarship on Occasion of Partnership's 25th Anniversary

Gil and Mary Jean Hebenstreit of Gillespie have established an annual scholarship through The Partnership for Educational Excellence.

The Hebenstreits say they “want to encourage young people to pursue their goals through education.” The $500 Gil and Mary Jean Hebenstreit Scholarship, first to be offered in 2018, The Partnership’s 25th anniversary year, will be awarded annually.

“We are so pleased that Gil and Mary Jean responded to our year of celebrating past scholars and other accomplishments,” says John Fassero, Jr., president and a founding member of The Partnership. Since 1992, the education foundation has channeled donors’ dollars into more than $800,000 in 393 academic tuition scholarships and hundreds of classroom mini-grants.

“The Hebenstreit’s ongoing support and example are very much appreciated,” says Fassero. “Without the generosity and faith of friends and neighbors, these programs would not be possible.”

Former Partnership Grant Recipient Bio 32

Nicholas Saracco graduated from Gillespie High School in 1998, earning a $500 Partnership for Educational Excellence tuition scholarship.

Nick attended the University of Notre Dame in Indiana from 1998 to 2002. He majored in finance and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in 2002, simultaneously earning a supplemental degree in computer applications. He then added to his skills by becoming a certified internal auditor in 2011.

Currently Nick works in Chicago for Grant Thornton LLP, an international independent audit, tax, and advisory firm. As a principal in advisory services, he provides internal audit and a variety of risk and control advisory services to public and private companies.

“I work with a mix of global and domestic organization across a number of industries, including manufacturing/consumer and industrial products, higher education, healthcare, retail, technology, not-for-profit, financial services, and pharmaceuticals,” he says.

Nick’s primary leisure activities include watching or attending Notre Dame football or basketball games as well as spending time with his friends and family. “I also enjoy traveling the world to experience new cultures, people, and cuisines. My job has given met the ability to visit a number of countries for work, while also giving me the flexibility to explore these locations with family and friends outside of work,” he says.

Regarding the role of post-secondary education in his life, Nick notes: “Without a post- secondary education, I would be nowhere near where I am today. My education has been a cornerstone for not only my career, but also my personal life. While college is generally focused on classroom work, there is so much to be learned from the social aspect as well. In my opinion this piece is just as important.”

He adds, “I loved growing up in Benld and attending CUSD7 schools, and I would never trade those experiences for anything. However, my college education exposed me to so many more cultures, people, and beliefs, and these were the pieces that shaped who I am today,” says Nick. “My degree opened doors for my career, provided avenues to lifelong friendships, and gave me the means to continue to explore the world and learn.”

As to his scholarship from The Partnership, Nick reflects that “I am blessed to have parents that sacrificed so much time, energy, and tuition money to help make my dream of graduating from Notre Dame a reality. However, my family and I were never going to be able to fully cover the costs of my education. Therefore, scholarships such as the one received from The Partnership were a necessity. I will forever be grateful for the generosity that so many have shown to endow The Partnership and provide the means for my college degree.”

Former Partnership Grant Recipient Bio 31

Adrienne Valerio Schoen graduated from Gillespie High School in 2002, earning a $500 Partnership for Educational Excellence tuition scholarship.

Adrienne attended Illinois State University (ISU) in Normal from 2002 through 2006. After a running start as a member of the ISU honor’s program, she majored in business management with a focus on human resources. On the Dean’s List for her final three semesters, Adrienne graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Her first job was as the human resource coordinator for Menards in Springfield, Illinois. “I was responsible for the interviewing and hiring process of new employees,” she says. In addition she “managed attendance, payroll, and training systems – as well as other human resource issues – at that location.”

After two years in Springfield, Adrienne says, “I wanted to be closer to home.” She sought and won employment at the First National Bank in Staunton. In May 2018 she will celebrate her 10th anniversary at the bank. “I have been responsible for several different aspects of the bookkeeping department, beginning with ATMs and VISA debit cards. I was then promoted into CDs and IRAs. I am now the assistant supervisor.”

She married Nick Schoen in 2009, and they welcomed daughter Alivia in 2011. “I enjoy spending my free time with friends and family, especially Alivia. In the summers we enjoy boating at Gillespie Lake, spending as much time on the water as we can,” she says.

Adrienne relishes the experiences she had as a college student. “It wasn’t easy for me,” she says. But “post-secondary education played an important role in my life in regards to helping me experience life outside our small community.”

She says that she returned home having gained many valuable life lessons from attending a university: “Seeing what is available to you in the world, meeting people from different cultures, and being on your own for the first time in your life is a very eye-opening experience.”

As to her Partnership scholarship, Adrienne recounts that the award helped pay for books her freshman year. “Thank you for your generosity!” she says. “It is wonderful what The Partnership has been able to accomplish over the years!”

Adrienne is the daughter of Lori and Harold Valerio of Gillespie.

James "Zirk" Zirkelbach Scholarship Created

    The James “Zirk” Zirkelbach Scholarship is the latest to be added to The Partnership for Educational Excellence’s coffers.  It was established by “Zirk” Zirkelbach’s nine children to honor his accomplishments in law enforcement in Macoupin County.   They describe him and his wife Mary as “proud” and “pretty much speechless” when they told him of their action.

    Perhaps best known as sheriff of Macoupin County from 1990-1998, he was previously Chief Investigator for Macoupin County.  He also served on the Macoupin County Board for many years; was instrumental in establishing Macoupin and Montgomery County Crime Stoppers; and was active in the statewide Sheriff’s Association.  His children include married daughters Tracy Werner, Joan Cain, and Kimberly Burns.  His sons are Robert, Dennis, James, Mark, Brian, and Bradley Zirkelbach.

    “We are thrilled at the exemplary generosity of Zirk’s children,” says John Fassero, Jr., president and founding member of The Partnership in 1992.  “It’s quite moving that they wanted him to enjoy this honor and to learn every year the name of the young person assisted by their generosity.”

    The Zirkelbach scholarship is the first of several new awards established during its 25th anniversary year.  Since 1992 the 501(c)3 educational foundation has remembered or honored more than 70 individuals or groups with scholarships.  Awards will be made this year from among 30 extant scholarships.

    In 2018 for the third year, The Partnership will increase its awards.  While established scholarships will remain at $500, The Partnership will match each award to bring the total to $1,000.  The funds for the match will come from The Partnership’s 25th anniversary fund drive.  

    “We are hopeful that our goal of raising $25,000 for 2018 and future matches will be met before the end of the school year,” he says.  “The enthusiasm and generosity of new and long-time supporters continues to amaze and gratify us.  It’s very humbling to think that every dollar we’ve passed on to classroom and graduates has been entrusted to us by literally thousands of alums, local business and professional people, and like-minded organizations.”

Megan Marcacci graduated from Gillespie High School in 1999, earning a $500 Partnership for Educational Excellence tuition scholarship.

Megan used her award toward tuition and fees at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. She majored in communications and minored in Spanish, earning a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 2003.

Since then she has pursued a career as a meeting an event planner. Currently she is working for Wells Fargo Advisors at their headquarters in downtown St. Louis. As part of the marketing department, her primary responsibilities include budget planning; sourcing and negotiating vendor contracts; planning all logistics for an event; executing the event; and reconciling invoices.

“I’ve been married for five years to John Campos,” she says. “We have one son, Charlie, who is three years old. We also have our westie/French bulldog, Romeo.”

In her free time Megan says she enjoys “spending time with family and friends, domestic and international travel, cooking, exercise and conscious living, the St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Blues, and shopping locally-sourced items.”

Calling her choice of Millikin University “one of the best decisions of my life,” she adds, “not only because of the wonderful education I received, but also for the relationships I made which continue to bless my life.”

The Partnership scholarship was invaluable because it “contributed to my education at Millikin,” she concludes.

Megan is the daughter of Jerry and Susie Marcacci of rural Sawyerville.

Raffle Winners Give Back to the Partnership

The Seraphin family has donated half of their winnings from the third annual Grand Raffle of The Partnership for Educational Excellence to the 501(c)3 education foundation.

The Seraphins have earmarked their giveback: $1,000 will be used to match for two years the existing memorial scholarship for Sally’s grandfather, Robert M. Prevedell. Sally Prevedell Seraphin is a 1998 alumna of Gillespie High School (GHS).

In addition, $1,500 will be used to create a Cordes Family Memorial Scholarship in honor of the parents and grandparents of Sally’s mother, Donna Cordes Prevedell.

“We are moved and thankful for the Seraphin’s generosity,” says John Fassero, Jr., president and founding member of the 501(c)3 education foundation. “The family values education and has close and fond ties to the area. Their decision to invest in future generations of Gillespie students while honoring their family is remarkable.”

The Partnership is celebrating its 25th anniversary during the 2017-2018 academic year. Since 1992 the foundation has invested more than $800,000 of donors contributions in the children of Community Unit School District 7 (CUSD7) in Macoupin County.

Eric Neuhaus graduated from Gillespie High School in 1999, earning a $500 Partnership for Educational Excellence tuition scholarship.

Eric attended Illinois State University in Normal from 1999 through 2003. He majored in industrial computer systems and earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial technology.

"Currently I'm a technical project manager at Maritz, LLC in Fenton, Missouri," says Eric. "My group builds incentive-based web sites for Honda Motor Company employees and consumers. I manage tasks involved in building the web sites. I make sure the tasks stay within the budget and scope of the project."

He notes that continuing education is essential in today's work place, adding that "since college I have earned my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. I am currently working toward my PMI-ACP (Project Management Institute - Agile Certified Practitioner) certification."

In his free time Eric enjoys camping, hunting, kayaking, snowboarding, and, of course, spending time with my family. Eric and Mary, his wife of six years, have two sons: Jude, age 4, and Isaac, age 2. "I look forward to sharing all my hobbies with my sons as they grow up," he says.

As the holder of a technical degree, Eric now reflects on the importance of a broad post- secondary education. "In college I would often get aggravated at the classes that weren't related to my major. Now I realize that those classes helped create a well-rounded foundation for future learning and opportunities," he says.

"The scholarship from The Partnership allowed me to meet my goals, not only at Illinois State University, but also allowed me to set the foundation for continuous learning and growththroughout my career and life," Eric reflects.

Eric is the son of Lynn and Nancy Neuhaus of Denver, Colorado.

Grand Raffle Winner is Alumna of Gillespie High School

The winner of The Partnership for Educational Excellence third annual Grand Raffle is the Seraphin family of suburban Chicago.

Sally Seraphin, a 1998 graduate of Gillespie High School (GHS), was shocked and delighted when she was notified that her family’s ticket had been drawn for the $5,000 prize. “We will definitely be giving back to The Partnership,” she said. “This is such a surprise. Thank you so much!”

The drawing was held in the cafeteria of the Ben-Gil Elementary School at the conclusion of its annual Palm Sunday spaghetti dinner. The raffle was a great success: all 500 tickets were sold.

“We are very gratified that the raffle has raised $5,000 for our tuition scholarships. A big thank you to all who purchased tickets,” says John Fassero, Jr., president and founding member. “Every penny will be used to match existing memorial scholarships so that we can consistently raise our awards to $1,000 per student. The proceeds will be added to our current 25th anniversary drive to raise $25,000 for future scholarship matches.”

Until 2016 The Partnership scholarships were $500 each, allowing the foundation to recognize and assist as many students as possible. In fact, between 20 and 30 percent of each GHS class has received scholarships over the past two decades.

“We want to maintain that percentage, but we realize that the cost of post-secondary education has risen. We and our donors are up to the challenge! We’re very optimistic about meeting our 25th anniversary goal,” says Fassero.

The Partnership is a 501(c)3 education foundation founded in 1992 in Macoupin County Community Unit School District 7 (CUSD7). To date it has channeled donors’ contributions into 393 scholarships worth $215,500 and into classroom mini-grants worth more than $600,000.

Corie Wirth Story graduated from Gillespie High School in 1996, earning a $500 Partnership for Educational Excellence tuition scholarship.

Corie attended Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois, graduating in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing.

Today she is a Gift Planning Officer with the American Red Cross in St. Louis and in Springfield, Illinois. “I meet with volunteers and donors to discuss their philanthropic legacy,” she says. “We talk about the importance of having a will and undertaking financial planning.”

Corie also earned a Missouri real estate license in 2004; she maintains it today.

She and her husband Craig keep busy at their Columbia, Illinois, home with their two boys, Hogan (7) and Byron (3). In addition, she enjoys running, golf, swimming, and crafting. “I would like to start an art cooperative in Monroe County,” she says, “and I am looking at teaching swimming lessons again.”

Reflecting on her award from The Partnership for Educational Excellence, Corie notes, “All of the scholarships I received helped me value the cost of an education, and they motivated me to graduate early to save money on tuition.”

Her post-secondary education also prompted her to share some advice with high school students contemplating their futures: “Keep your mindset broad and open while in college. Realize that your career plans can go in different directions from those you start with.”

Corie is the daughter of Rob and Denise Wirth of Gillespie. 

Former Partnership Grant Recipient Bio 27

Bradley graduated from Gillespie High School (GHS) in 2007, earning the Bank of America scholarship. He used the $500 Partnership award toward freshman tuition at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC).

Bradley graduated from SIUC in 2011 summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science with a 4.0 GPA.

He immediately entered the SIUC school of law, graduating magna cum laude in 2014 with a Juris Doctorate (JD) degree.

Since October 2014 Bradley has worked at Drummond Law LLC in Litchfield. “I currently handle Social Security Disability, Worker’s Compensation, criminal law, and other types of law, including writing wills and deeds,” he says. He also handles marketing for the firm.

In his spare time Bradley enjoys traveling and hiking. “My most recent trip to Colorado included hiking the Rockies in Estes Park,” he says. “I also enjoy spending time with family and friends, and spoiling my dog Scout.”

Reflecting on the role of post-secondary education in his life, Bradley says, “It played a very important role in my life by allowing me to practice law, a profession I envisioned myself working in from a young age. It also gave me the opportunity to learn and develop, not only the intelligence and skills needed to receive my degrees, but college and law school also helped me learn and develop as a person.”

As to his Partnership scholarship, he says: “It helped make sure that the rising cost of college did not prevent me from obtaining my education.” In addition, Bradley notes, “Now that I am paying on my student loans, I greatly appreciate that the scholarship helped reduce those loans!”

Bradley is the son of the late Tom Bauer and Evelyn and Dan Bilyeu of Gillespie. 

Former Partnership Grant Recipient Bio 26

Ashley graduated from Gillespie High School (GHS) in 2011, earning the Carol Enrico DeLucca Scholarship for a Top Girl Graduate. She used the $500 Partnership award toward freshman tuition at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Ashley majored in public relations and minored in music business at Belmont, graduating early in December of 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

“I am now an account executive at MP&F Public Relations in downtown Nashville, Tennessee,” she says. “I work on multiple client accounts which cover everything from non- profits to government entities to hotels. On any given day I may be working on digital marketing, event planning, or media relations. It keeps me busy!”

Ashley notes with pride: “I have been with MP&F for three years and within that time I’ve been promoted twice.” She notes that she plans to stay in Nashville “at least for the next couple of years. I guess you could say the South has stolen my heart.”

In her free time, she loves to travel. “I have made it a priority in my life to travel,” she says. “In May I went to Ireland, and next year I plan to go to Germany and the Czech Republic.”

As to the importance of post-secondary education to Ashley, she says, “I’m so thankful for my college education! My college experience was one of the best of my life. I really grew up and became my own, independent person.”

Her scholarship from The Partnership “was very helpful,” she says. “Between tuition, books, and dorm needs, every little bit counts! Thank you!”

Ashley is the daughter of Bill and Luann Heyen of rural Gillespie. 

The Partnership Thanks Civic Partners for 25 Years of Support

Both the towns of Gillespie and Benld recently welcomed representatives of The Partnership for Educational Excellence at routine board meetings to mark the education foundation’s 25th anniversary.

Nanci Grandone, the founder and first president of The Partnership for Educational Excellence, and John Fassero, Jr., a founding member and current president, received proclamations of congratulations from both Mayor John Hicks of Gillespie and Jim Kelly of Benld.

In turn, Fassero thanked the villages for their past financial and in-kind support during 25 years of fund raisers.

Since its founding, Fassero said, the Partnership has distributed nearly $600,000 in the form of classroom mini-grants and $215,500 as 393 scholarships to graduating Gillespie High School seniors. All funds administered by the 501(c)3 non-profit organization come from donations, bequests and memorials.

“We’ve worked very hard over the years to be transparent and good stewards of that money. It’s not our money,” Fassero noted. “It’s other peoples’ money. We are the funnel that funnels other peoples’ money to the school district.”

For the volunteer organization’s 25th anniversary, the group has set a goal of raising $25,000 in new donations, Fassero said, to support an increase in the size of its scholarships from $500 to $1,000. This increase will come in the form of a dollar-for-dollar match to established memorial scholarships.

“It’s still a modest scholarship at $1,000, but for many students, it is the only scholarship available to them,” he said. “Most years we provide scholarships for up to 25 percent of the graduating class and we are very proud of that. We hope to maintain that percentage, but we will need help to meet that goal.”

Fassero thanked the councils, stating, “Your support has added both to our resources and credibility. It’s clear that we share the philosophy that ‘Only on the foundation of education can our children build productive lives and a stable society.’”

Both mayors stated in their proclamations that the village officials “applaud The Partnership’s commitment to educational excellence and do hereby encourage residents and alumni, civic and business leaders in CUSD7 to continue their generous support of the children of CUSD7, our most valuable asset.”

Early Bird Winners

Two lucky winners took home $100 each on the first night that Grand Raffle tickets went on sale by The Partnership for Educational Excellence. Andrew Brummett of Edwardsville and Nickie Barrett of Gillespie, on behalf of her infant daughter Violet Bellovich, were “early bird” buyers at this month’s “For the Love of Education” trivia night sponsored by The Partnership for Educational Excellence.

“This is our third Grand Raffle,” explains John Fassero, Jr., president and founding member of the education foundation. “We have had an outstanding response to the drawing for two years, and 2018 is no exception. Tickets are reportedly going faster than ever.”

Tickets are $20, and only 500 will be sold. “This makes the odds of winning excellent,” notes Fassero. All proceeds from this year’s raffle will be used to increase Partnership scholarships from $500 each to $1,000 each.

“We have previously kept our awards modest so that we could recognize the greatest number of Gillespie High School (GHS) graduates,” says Fassero. “Considering that we routinely award scholarships to 20% to 30% of each GHS graduating class, and considering that post-secondary education costs have soared, we’re raising funds to offer more help to more students.”

The drawing for a single grand prize of $5,000 will be at Ben-Gil Elementary School’s spaghetti dinner on Palm Sunday, March 25. Any tickets left on that day can be purchased at the spaghetti dinner.
